“Sugar Birds”
by Cheryl Grey Bostrom
This book is about a young girl, Aggie, who falsely believes she has killed her parents after setting a small fire that eventually burns down their house. She is frightened that she will go to jail so she runs away.
Aggie loves to climb trees so she runs to the forest and hides out for several weeks, climbing from tree to tree and eating plants and berries.
Meanwhile, her brother Burnaby, who is autistic, works at a dairy farm that is owned by their aunt and uncle. Aggie spies on him knowing that she cannot go to him for help.
Celia, staying with her grandmother, helps in the search for Aggie. She finds evidence of aggie in the woods and leaves food for her on stumps and in the crook of trees.
A dangerous man named Cabot threatens to ruin Burnaby’s job at the farm by planning to accuse him of theft. He also tries to seduce Celia and is jealous of her friendship with Burnaby.
It was an interesting read and the group enjoyed reading it.
