“Bathsheba”
by Jill Eileen Smith
Bathsheba is the third in a series of the stories of King David’s wives. Bathseba’s story in the Bible can be found in 2 Samuel.
In the biblical version, Bathsheba is made out to be a seductress seeking the King’s favor whereas in this rendition, she is seduced by David, and becomes pregnant by him. Bathsheba is married to Uriah the Hittite. King David tries to tempt Uriah in coming home from the battlefield to lay with his wife to cover the fact that she is with child. When David’s plan doesn’t work, he orders Uriah to be killed and then he marries Bathsheba.
David falls from grace with this act and the Lord’s wrath causes their first child to die in infancy. This throws their house into chaos and anguish.
Loyalty, trust and betrayal are woven throughout the story. It was well written and the Book Club members enjoyed it. Bathsheba is King David’s last wife and she was with him until he died. She bore him many sons, the first being the future King Solomon.
It was an interesting read and the group enjoyed reading it..
