Connecting Through Creativity
Have you ever gathered around a table with friends or family, sifting through a pile of vibrant puzzle pieces? There’s something magical about the way a puzzle invites people to come together. Whether it’s at a cozy café or a living room, the act of assembling those colorful fragments transforms a mundane moment into a lively social event. That is what inspired Jerry Tavernier to institute the puzzle table!
The Old puzzle table…
The “puzzle table” was a generous name for what was actually a rickety folding card table with a stubborn, concave bow in its center. Every time someone leaned on the edge, the table teetered on its metal legs, sending a wave of cardboard pieces sliding toward the middle like a slow-motion landslide. Its only saving grace was that it could be collapsed and tucked into a closet whenever the Fellowship Hall needed to clear the floor for a potluck.
Everything changed this spring when the Edwardsburg Branch Library finally migrated to its sleek new facility. At the library’s silent auction, we spotted a windfall. We returned with one of the old library’s heavy, solid oak reading tables—broad, flat, and immovable. Now, the puzzles sit on surfaces that don’t sag or sway, anchored by history and the weight of a thousand books.

The Debut of the New Table
It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon when the new wood library table was moved into position and the old metal leg folding table was folded up and stored away. Not only were we able to secure the new table, but also several wood chairs so the cold uncomfortable metal folding chairs were also moved away. Sunday morning after Worship service was when the usual “puzzlers” were surprised with the new table and seating.

Piece by Piece: The Bonding Experience
What makes working on a puzzle so appealing? It’s not just about the satisfaction of completing the picture; it’s the teamwork involved. Each person brings their unique perspective, tackling different sections while sharing laughter and the occasional playful banter. As you work together to find the right pieces, you’re not just solving a puzzle; you’re creating memories and strengthening bonds.

Next Up…
It didn’t take long for more “puzzlers” to join the effort. Many groups meet at the church and contribute to the completion of the puzzle. It’s an open invitation. The first puzzle (shown at left) was finished in a few weeks. The next puzzle up for assembly is already started (puzzle detail shown below). Come join us at coffee hour after Sunday Worship Service or anytime you are visiting the church and try your puzzling skills.
A Challenge Worth Taking
Even the most challenging puzzles can bring a sense of triumph when completed as a group. This endeavor encourages communication, and, let’s be honest, a little friendly competition makes it all the more engaging! So, next time you’re feeling bored, why not gather a few friends for a puzzling adventure? After all, a puzzle isn’t just a game; it’s an experience that brings people closer together—piece by piece!
