“Last Light Over Galveston”
by Jennifer L. Wright
The story in the book covers the devastating hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas in 1900 killing up to 10,000 people, the largest loss of human life, by far, in a natural disaster that the nation has ever seen
My first thoughts on this story were that the plot was quite interesting and fast moving in the beginning but then slogged down in the middle. The ending was back to the initial pace. I thought maybe the author wanted you to feel what the protagonist was feeling by dragging on and on – the time she spent slogging through the rising water.
Some members of the book club agreed with me somewhat but didn’t feel it distracted from the story. We discussed several themes that became evident while reading, such as the huge cultural differences between characters, the act of coming of age, the treatment of women in the time period, and lastly, the spiritual enlightenment of the main character.
The genre is historical fiction so many of the issues covered actually did happen. Interestingly, this was the beginning of the creation of the National Weather Service.
The group gives the book a “Thumbs Up”.

Next book: “When Crickets Cry” by Charles Martin.
We are meeting on Wednesday, June 24th at 6:30 on ZOOM.
